In the early Fall of 1952 George and Lillian Barnes built and opened a small general store on their property in Stromness, Ontario. They sold gasoline and groceries seven days a week. While running their store, George also operated one dump truck and a shovel doing small excavating jobs. The plants were being built in Lowbanks and this lead to a lot more work for the small excavating company. The store was closed and used for the office. As time went on the business continued to grow and their children got older. Their six sons and four girls along with their husbands and wives all have joined the company at one point. A lot of their grandchildren during their teen years have been employed during the summer giving them the work ethic and skills for their future careers. In 1986 George brought in a ships wheelhouse that was used as the office until June 2015. It was flagged as one of Canada’s Large Roadside Attractions. After George’s passing in 1998, the company continued under the management of five sons, Jim, Larry, Keith, Alan and Terry.
